Ayurveda

What is Ayurveda?

mind-body-soul

“Ayurveda” is one of the world's oldest holistic (“mind-body-soul”) healing systems. It was developed more than 5,000 years ago in Ancient India. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge) that literally translates as “the science/wisdom of life” or “the knowledge of longevity”.
Ayurveda’s fundamental approach to health and well-being is that you must reach your unique state of balance in your whole being—body, mind, and spirit. Its main goal is to promote good health, and secondary goal is to fight diseases.

The Dosha Concept

According to Ayurveda the whole universe is made up of 5 elements Space (Akash), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), Water (Jal) & Earth (Prithvi). Ayurveda believes that everything in the universe is connected. If your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe, you have good health. When something disrupts this balance, your doshas are imbalanced leading to diseased condition.

These 5 elements combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies, called doshas. They control how your body works. They are Vatadosha (space and air); Pitta dosha (fire and water); and Kaphadosha (water and earth).

Panchakarma

Panchkarma is a part of the purification therapies of Ayurveda. ‘Panch’ means five and ‘Karma’ means actions so literally translated, it is a set of five systematic actions used for purification of the body. It is used to bring balance among the aggravated doshas into balance and to flush out the accumulated ‘ama’ toxins from the minute channels to which they stick in the body. Panchkarma uses the normal modes of elimination like the intestines, sweat glands and the urinary tract to cleanse the body and thereby eliminate, once and for all the disease causing doshas and the toxins. Every person will not require all therapies at any given time however some of these cleansing procedures may be incorporated in Naturasayurvedic offering based on the physician and constitution of the patient.
